Between critique and intervention

Seminar with Steve Woolgar, Mike Lynch and Alan Irwin

Monday, September 4, 2006 - 13:30 to 17:00

Between critique and intervention

- STS and engagement

Seminar on September, 4 2006 with

  • Prof. Steve Woolgar (University of Oxford)

  • Prof. Michael Lynch (CornellUniversity)

  • Prof. Alan Irwin (University of Liverpool)

Science and Technology Studies (STS) focuses explicitly on the study of practices, practical consequences and practical politics. Meanwhile, the discussion of how STS is to engage with the practice studied is an open and hotly debated one. Some researchers argue that the role of research is to keep critical distance, while others argue that researchers should give back to the practice studied, by offering insights on how to better organize that practice.

In this seminar, three prominent STS scholars will offer views on this topic:

13:30 - 13:45

Introduction by Maja Horst & Julie Sommerlund

13.45 – 14.30

Steve Woolgar: Does STS mean Business?

14.45 – 15.30

Mike Lynch: The Virtue of Reflexivity?

15.45 – 16.30

Alan Irwin: Social Science Engaging the Public?

16.30 – 17.00
