Opening of the Centre for School Leadership

Tuesday, May 5, 2009 - 15:00 to 17:00

It is a great pleasure inviting you to the opening of the Centre for School Leadership.

In recent years substantial changes in the conditions of management and leadership of schools have taken place, creating new tensions within the field of professional bureaucracy and school leadership. Besides public sector leadership this also has an impact on the welfare society in general as schools occupy a far more central position in societal development. School managers today are faced with different and expanding political demands in terms of leadership and managerial tasks, creating issues that are underexposed in the fields of research.

What these issues constitute and how they are to be appropriately addressed are perspectives of the Centre for School Leadership.

Dr Andreas Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos is visiting from University of Westminster and will give a talk on:

Decolonisation of Knowledge and the Successful Failure of Theory

Philippopoulos-Mihalopoulos highlights the interrelation and struggle between theory and practice. How the one is the other’s utopia: always there to ‘draw on’ but never to encounter, which ‘steers’ practice to theory and theory to practice, while steering both of them away from themselves.

This interaction between practice and theory which at the same time seems necessary and impossible, unquestionably, draws attention to the somewhat corresponding relationship between UCC and CBS, whose collaborative commitments aim to shed new light on the questions, which the above mentioned issues and perspectives would in all probability carry to fruition.

After the talk there will be a reception with refreshments of various sorts.
