Invitation to Frederik Larsen's PhD defence

Objects and Social Actions - on Second-hand Valuation Practices

Monday, September 21, 2015 - 14:00 to 16:00

In forder to obtain the PhD degree, Frederik Larsen has submitted his thesis entitled:

Objectsd and Social Actions - on Second-hand Valuation Practices

Frederik Larsen

The Thesis addresses the question of how value is created in second-hand markets. Through ethnographic studies of charity organizations and private wholesale companies I describe the local and global trajectories objects take from discards to cultural commodities and the practices that enable the transformation.

Rooted in anthropological theory of value the thesis describes social organization and material resistance as the main factors in valuations and adds to a growing body of literature on second-hand cultures and reuse practices.
