Sustainability conference
What IS THE SCANDINAVIAN CONTEXT?
This conference is intended for scholars and practitioners with the intent to bring academics and practitioners together to consider sustainability in a Scandinavian context and the development a research paradigm dedicated to exploring sustainability in a Scandinavian context – and to consider the potential implications for a broader global context.
The Scandinavian way
Scandinavia represents a particularly promising context in which to consider sustainability and the associated issues. Scandinavia is often recognized as a world leader in sustainability where Scandinavian companies are disproportionately well-represented in the major sustainability performance indicators including the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and the Scandinavian region as a whole has demonstrated remarkably strong and balanced country-level economic, environmental, societal, and economic performances. Furthermore, the most commonly used definition of sustainability as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations to meet its needs” has Scandinavian roots as it is drawn from the 1987 “Brundtland Report” in reference to the chair of the committee: former Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlen Brundtland.
However, the challenges associated with sustainability continue to rise throughout the world, where this is no different in Scandinavia. Thus despite these aforementioned references to comparatively strong sustainability performances found in Scandinavian, further examinations are merited to more critically explore sustainability in a Scandinavian context where looming challenges may be mounting.
