[READ] 'Corporate Social Responsibility Under Authoritarian Capitalism'

Peter S. Hofman (University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China), Jeremy Moon (Copenhagen Business School) and Bin Wu (University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK) discuss the concept of CSR in the Chinese context of "authoritarian capitalism". After considering the emergence of CSR in China according to historic institutionalism, the authors identify two major forms of CSR, one in the family-owned sector reflecting local practices and the other in the corporate, state-owned sector reflecting national and international expectations. By investigating these dynamics, they open up the research debate around “state-led society-driven” CSR, both on a theoretical and practical level.
