Department of Strategy and Innovation

Yotam Sofer is a PhD Fellow at the Department of Strategy and Innovation at Copenhagen Business School. His research interests lie in the economics of science and innovation, focusing on the role of science funding in shaping the scientific workforce and knowledge production. He also explores inequalities in the innovation process and in science. Additionally, Yotam investigates the diffusion of knowledge from academia to policymaking, particularly in social sciences research, examining the effectiveness of different diffusion channels.
His dissertation, "Three Essays on the Economics of Science," examines key aspects of this field. The first chapter, co-authored with Olof Ejermo and published in Research Policy, is titled "When Colleges Graduate: Micro-Level Effects on Publications and Scientific Organization." The second chapter, "Exploring the Role of Social Media in the Diffusion of Economic Research," serves as his job market paper. The third chapter, "Ready to Fly the Nest? How Autonomy Provisions and Mobility Requirements Shape Researchers' Early Career Choices," is a collaborative effort with Hans Christian Kongsted and Valentina Tartari. Yotam's dissertation is supervised by Hans Christian Kongsted (Copenhagen Business School), Valentina Tartari (Stockholm School of Economics), and Olof Ejermo (Lund University), with an expected graduation date of June 2025.
Yotam has garnered valuable research experience at notable institutions, including The Maurice Falk Institute for Economic Research in Israel and the Research Division of the Bank of Israel. These experiences have provided him with a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied economics, enriched by diverse research environments. This background has equipped him to contribute meaningful insights into the fields of economics and innovation.
As an active member of the academic community, Yotam is involved in reviewing for DRUID conferences and the Academy of Management (AoM), and regularly presents and discusses his work at various academic conferences. He has organized Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) at DRUID and AoM, and contributes to the academic development of his peers by organizing the Junior Seminar Series at the Department of Strategy and Innovation at CBS, as well as the CBS SI and Max Plank Institute of Innovation and Competition Junior Paper Development Workshop (MAXSI PDW). Additionally, Yotam serves on the board of the PhD Association at CBS. His commitment to academic service underscores his dedication to fostering a collaborative and supportive research environment.
