Falck and Digital Business Innovation – our approach
Falck is a service company within areas like emergency service, global assistance, medical assistance and safety service. Although strongly rooted in Denmark, where is it headquartered, the company spans 45 markets in six continents. It is the world’s largest international rescue company, and it has a staff of about 22.000 employees.
Within this business area, the number of new technologies evolves exponentially, and this opens up a range of new business opportunities, potentially new business models, but also new challenges. New players are quite often appearing from “nowhere”, and they come into well-established market and challenge existing marked players on value creation and value capture.
This scenario is not unique to the service industry of Falck, but the approach to cope with these challenges and to develop markets has to be unique. In this talk, CIO Torben Ruberg will present some of the challenges, considerations and initiatives of Falck in response to the emergence of new technologies and new competitors.

C.V OF Torben Ruberg
Torben Ruberg is Group CIO of Falck. He got his degree as an industrial engineer in 1992 from Danish Technical University, and joined Falck after his graduation. Initially  he was working as project manager and later IT manager for one part of the Group. Since 2005,  he has been Group CIO.

During his years as CIO, it has been a turbulent time. It started with the IPO of Falck in 1995, the merger with the UK based security company Group 4 to become Group 4 Falck in 2000, and back to become an independent company owned by among others the venture Fund Nordic Capital in 2005. In 2011 Nordic Capital sells its shares to Lundbeck Foundation and KIRKBI Foundation, who are expected to have a very long term engagement with Falck.

Torben has sailed the IT-ship in these turbulent waters, where Falck has grown with a factor of 4 on revenue, and from a presence in 5 to now 47 countries.

Torben is driven by the five visions:
−    Change (=> Growth)
−    Continuous optimisation (Continuous Service Improvement))
−    Business Empowering (and disruption) by Technology
−    Organisational Orchestration
−    Leadership

In 2015, Torben received the price from ComputerWorld as ’CIO of the year’.
