PhD defence: Olga Rykov Ibsen
This doctoral research investigates the effectiveness of intercultural business communication via English as a Lingua Franca by studying speech production in the form of directives.
By doing a cross-linguistic analysis of the data consisting of directives produced by British, Russian, and Danish speakers in their native language and English, Olga found that when making requests people engage in a problem-solving activity.
Her findings suggest that Russians and Danes use different problem-solving strategies in English from those employed by the native speakers of English. Moreover, her analysis revealed several important direct and indirect transfers from Russian to Russian-English, which she believes can have a negative effect on the effectiveness of intercultural communication via ELF.
