Adressing Global Challenges

CBS Maritime is committed to addressing the big question of how to achieve economic and social progress in the maritime industry. CBS Maritime aims to strengthen a maritime focus at CBS and create the foundation for CBS as a stronger partner for the maritime industry, as well as for other universities and business schools.

CBS Maritime bridges classical management disciplines (e.g. economics and finance, organisation, marketing, management and accounting, logistics and operations research) with neighbouring disciplines that place business in a broader societal context (e.g. business and economic history, law, economic geography, political science, sociology and information systems research).

The research profile is thus based on longstanding business school traditions, and it involves the ability to model, calculate and optimise different business issues but also a critical stance towards methodological and disciplinary constraints.

Our research is developed on the premise that we should work together with the maritime industry in identifying key questions and research challenges that are of common interest and significance to the world of practice and to academia. CBS Maritime is engaged in extensive collaboration with maritime businesses and organisations in an effort to identify a number of broad challenges and key research questions for different segments of the maritime supply chain.

Currently we are involved in several research projects and programmes that support the relevant educational activities at CBS.

Building Strength Through Collaboration

CBS Maritime is broadly embedded in the relevant research environments and teaching programs at CBS and our strategy can be summarized as “Building Strength Through Collaboration”.

Coordination and collaboration at CBS:
Our internal strategy is mainly about pursuing collaboration and coordinating activities across departments and other relevant units. International shipping is an area that begs the participation of social science researchers with different expertise, so for us it is natural to seek such cross-departmental collaboration. We seek to increase the number of PhD students and we aspire to team up with other researchers at CBS, either by having more colleagues joining CBS Maritime or by collaborating with other groups at CBS on select issues. We need to host internal seminars and team-building workshops as well as invite guests from appropriate universities and research units to engage in dialogue. We also strive to support our PhD students by building a proper academic infrastructure designed specifically to developing their research and teaching abilities.

External academic networks:
While our external relationships to other maritime researchers may be many and varied, we perceive building an extensive and committed “core network” of maritime-focused social science scholars in the important global maritime hubs vital for the center being able to reach its goals, and for building a basis for its future development. We collaborate closely with maritime research environments at other Danish universities (Maritime DTU, SDU, AU and KU) generally with respect to coordinating our activities within the maritime area and specifically on individual joint projects. We collaborate very closely with colleagues from Singapore Management University, the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (Sauder School of Business and Liu Institute of Global Issues), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen campus) - collaboration that extends beyond research and includes joint teaching programs and structured student exchange in relation to global shipping, trade and logistics. We also collaborate closely with Kühne Logistics University in Hamburg and with the University of Applied Science in Bremen. We have established a collaborative nordic research network with partners from Norway (Norwegian Business School in Bergen, Oslo University, BI), Sweden (Linköping University, Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University), Finland (University of Jyväskylä), and Iceland (University of Iceland).

Business community networking:
To make sure that our research is relevant to the international maritime community we focus on applied research and we seek to strengthen our external relationships to maritime businesses, organizations and authorities. The shipping industry has changed markedly over the past years, from a traditionally closed and secretive industry to an open industry with an outspoken interest in supporting independent research of relevance to the maritime community (which also includes authorities, companies in other maritime industries and several industry associations). We have established "dialogue partnerships" with a number of maritime companies and we have a well-established advisory board with representatives broadly from the maritime sector in Denmark as well as abroad.
