Becoming A Tourism Researcher – How The Hell Did I End Up Here? CANCELLED - NEW DATE TBA
NOTE!!!!! THE LECTURE IS POSTPONED - NEW DATE TBA LATER
Becoming a tourism researcher – how the hell did I end up here? Academic research topics are often a mixture of individual backgrounds, personal interests and pure coincidences. In the retro-perspective though, it often shows a narrative framework that can explain our strange academic journey. In this lecture, Sebastian Zenker will retrace his own researcher journey and dive into how the complexity of place has inspired him to look at several issues in tourism and related fields. Sebastian, will elaborate on the need of interdisciplinary research and how collaborations are the fuel of our research. He also will advocate for the need of so-called ‘pet projects’ and out-of-the-box research to keep us productive and inspired. Because at the end it is all about fun in our jobs – and remembering that (besides all the merits) we have one of the best jobs in the world.
Facts about Sebastian Sebastian achieved his doctoral degree at the University of Hamburg (Germany), where he also worked as an external Lecturer (2007–2010). He gained international experience as visiting scholar at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (Netherlands) where he worked as postdoctoral student and visiting Assistant Professor (2011–2014). Furthermore, he is a member of the interdisciplinary RespectResearchGroup and worked as a Senior Lecturer at the Technical University Berlin (Germany; 2013–2014).
In his current research, he concentrates on places as brands and on the management of such place brands. Furthermore, he is interested in the field of tourism and destination branding, especially in the differences between the place perception between tourists and residents – and the issue of so-called Over-Tourism. Sebastian’s work was presented at various conferences, book chapters, and international peer-reviewed top-journals, such as the International Journal of Research in Marketing, Tourism Management, or Environment and Planning A.
