INVITATION FOR PHD DEFENCE - Felix Schilling

Friday, March 1, 2024 - 14:00 to 16:00

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Felix Schilling has submitted his thesis entitled:

Essays on business and politics in resource-abundant, low-income countries

This dissertation  explores connections between politics and businesses in resource-abundant, low-income countries. It argues that privatizations and property rights, rather than separating business and politics, redefine their interaction and influence socio-economic development. Each chapter, analyzed with quantitative methods, delves into the micro-level control, allocation, and regulation of assets in the private sector. Chapters One and Two focus on cronyism in Mozambique, revealing how business partnerships and political selection shape the landscape. Chapter Three shifts to the DRC and its neighboring countries, examining the awarding of mining licenses and its impact on the link between economic value and local conflict.

The thesis will be available from research.cbs.dk
