CBS researcher receives prestigious Tietgen Award

The Danish Society for Education and Business (DSEB) awards the prize, which is one of the largest for young researchers in Northern Europe.

“DSEB would like to support talented researchers who significantly contribute to research in business-oriented social sciences and the humanities, also on an international level. That’s the aim of the Tietgen Award, which has been presented by DSEB since 1929 to mark the centennial of C.F. Tietgen’s birth,” explains DSEB Chair of the Board Torben Möger Pedersen.
 
According to the Awards Committee, the recipient’s research is highly topical and important at a time when companies in Denmark and throughout the world are trying to adapt to globalisation and the opportunities and limitations that can arise when moving all or part of their operations abroad. They often hope to gain access to cheaper labour, more resources and new markets.
 
“Companies encounter not only tremendous opportunities but also tremendous risk when they move operations abroad. The problem is that there is a limited amount of research on the topic, which is where Larsen steps in, improving our knowledge about what it takes for companies to turn their hopes into reality,” clarifies Professor Peter Møllgaard, chair of the Tietgen Awards Committee.
 
Møllgaard presented the Tietgen Award during this year’s annual DSEB and International Chamber of Commerce Denmark dinner, which took place at Børsen Tuesday evening with the participation of prominent representatives from Danish business and industry and academia.
 
This year’s recipient, Marcus Møller Larsen, who also works at BI Norwegian Business School, is pleased with the recognition. His research shows that far from all companies are well enough prepared when they move operations abroad.
 
“A great deal of companies fail when they move abroad. They underestimate the impact on their organisation of moving to a completely different country, where they are unfamiliar with the culture, their network is not strong enough and where the costs can be higher than expected. As a result many companies discover that operating outside their country’s own borders is extremely difficult,” says Larsen.
 
The Tietgen Award is one of Denmark’s most prestigious distinctions bestowed on young researchers in Northern Europe. Throughout the years, the award has been given to remarkably talented people and personalities, rewarding talented young researchers in business-oriented social sciences and humanities who have achieved significant international recognition for their research.
