MSC Professor Emeritus Robert Phillipson has received the 2024 Presidential Award of the TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) International Association in the USA.

This was in ‘recognition of his seminal work on linguistic imperialism, linguistic discrimination and language policy, which paved the way for a critical focus in English Language Teaching (ELT), and for his work on linguistic human rights with Dr. Tove Skutnabb- Kangas.’ His acceptance speech is here.

Robert Phillipson was awarded the UNESCO Linguapax prize in 2008. In an online seminar at the UN in December 2023, commemorating 75 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he assessed how languages worldwide are faring. On which, see the first ever Handbook of Linguistic Human Rights, that Tove and Robert edited for Wiley-Blackwell.
