PhD Defence: Elisabet Skov Nielsen

Monday, February 3, 2025 - 14:30 to 16:30

In order to obtain the PhD degree, Elisabet Skov Nielsen has submitted her thesis entitled:

The leadership work of mobilizing committed future action
An ethnomethodological approach

This article-based PhD thesis explores the collaborative leadership work of mobilizing committed future action on emerging organizational issues in everyday interactions. Drawing on ethnomethodological conversation analysis and data from two Danish organizations, it reveals key interactional challenges and practices, including negotiation of ambiguous problem constructions, ownership, conflicting and co-existing accountabilities. The analyses highlight relational complexity, power dynamics, and the need for improvisation and balancing of influence attempts in mobilizing actors to commit to future action. Overall, the thesis challenges romanticized notions of leadership and offers perspectives on leadership as dynamic, situated processes, where success depends less on the application of generalized techniques and more on the ability of leadership actors to engage reflexively and adaptively in ongoing interactional work.

The thesis will be available from research.cbs.dk
