Seminar: Non monetary trade and agroecological localisation: core social practices for ecological food provision and consumption?

February 20th - An afternoon seminar on ecological food systems by network on Social Innovation and Civic Engagement (nSICE.org) and Cluster on Communicative Dimensions of Sustainability.

Thursday, February 20, 2014 - 15:00 to 16:00

Jo Ram (Oxford Brookes University) will discuss sustainability and social innovation in relation to food provision and consumption based on lessons from the UK.

Abstract: The presentation will discuss two main findings from my doctorate research on local ecological food systems in the UK. First, non monetary trade must become more central to economic organisation as it’s not possible to quantify all inputs necessary for and all benefits accrued from ecological food provision. Second, agroecological localisation must be recognised as core to ecological food systems regardless of scale.

Agroecological localisation is both a commitment and a set of practices. The commitment is to the production of ecological food and the localisation of the food system, and the practice is the specific steps taken to realise this commitment. The presentation will discuss the benefits of non monetary trade and agroecological localisation, two innovative and crucial social practices for ecological food systems and consumption.

Jo Ram is an Urban Futures Scholar and PhD candidate in Sustainable Consumption at Oxford Brookes University’s Department of Planning. Jo’s doctorate investigated whether UK urban grassroots initiatives are creating or have potential to create ecologically sustainable systems of food and energy provision.

The research identified innovations in social practices necessary for ecological provision and consumption, and barriers to and opportunities for implementing these practices. Jo’s research interests include sustainable consumption, sustainability transitions, sustainable cities, local food and energy systems, and community activism.

The seminar is organized by Julie Uldam.
